Seminar: "Massive Integration of Offshore Wind Power Using HVDC"

The use of High Voltage Direct Current technologies for the massive integration of wind power was discussed by Dr Francisco M. Gonzalez-Longatt at "Colegio de Ingenieros" of Chile on 7th August 20120.

This seminar is an introduction toward the development of the future electricity networks. An review od the historical evolution of HVDC was presented and a comparison between AC and DC was discussed.

A special aspect explained during this seminar was the different component of a HVDC substation.

The concept of multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) was presented and a discussion about the controllers used for the integration of offshore wind power was discussed.

A selection of MTDC cases around the world are presented and special emphasis on the development of offshore wind power at the North Sea, Supergrid Project.
